Lentil gravy (Dal fry) recipe is one of the most famous recipes in India. This lentil is made in many ways, but mostly it is made with Split Pigeon Peas or tur dal and gram lentils. Lentil gravy (Dal fry) is a kind of thick spicy soup that is served with rice and various dishes. Clarified butter or Ghee is an essential ingredient in Indian kitchens and used in lentil gravy (dal fry), which makes it tasty and nutritious.

2 cups Split Pigeon Peas or tur dal

3 tomatoes finely chopped 

2 finely chopped onions

3 green chilies chopped (adjust according to your taste)

1 spoon of ginger-garlic paste

a small spoon of turmeric

Red chilly powder as per your taste

2 small spoon coriander powder

pinch of asafoetida

Whole red chilly

Small amount of cumin

Salt as per taste

Clarified butter or Ghee

Finely cut green coriander for garnish


How to Cook Lentil (Split Pigeon Peas) or dal fry:

1. First, wash the split pigeon peas or tur dal. Then keep it aside for 20 minutes.

2. Now we have to cook the lentils. Take a cooker and add water, lentil, turmeric, salt, and close the lid. Keep the cooker on the gas and let the lentils cook. After two whistles, reduce the heat. After one more whistle, turn off the gas. In case you do not have a cooker, you can directly cook lentil in a vessel for which add 4 cups of water for 1/4th cup of lentil and add turmeric, salt. Boil it until almost cooked.

3. Heat the pan on the gas, add clarified butter or ghee and put chopped onion and cook it for a while, then add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies.stir this until you get a nice fragrance of cooked ginger-garlic.

4. Add tomatoes and cook them until they get soft

5. Now add red chilly powder and coriander powder and cook for 2 minutes on the medium flame.

6. Add cooked lentils in a pan and cook it on the medium flame for 4 to 5 minutes and turn off the gas.

7. After this, we will do tempering for this heat the pan add clarified butter or ghee. Put cumin seeds, whole red chilly and asafoetida. Don't burn it. This takes hardly 30 seconds.

8. Add this tempering on the top of lentil gravy or dal fry.

9. Garnish with chopped coriander.
